- The sustainable use of resources (especially land) depends on a number of scientific, social and planning factors. We must understand the interplay between these factors if we are to be able to shape future development in a more sustainable way. - In built-up areas, open spaces have an important part to play in people's wellbeing and in the urban environment - and thus in the continued existence of our towns and cities as places to live. The role of open spaces must be understood at all levels so that they can be designed to fulfil their function in the future as well as today. Projects: Bühler-Conrad, Moretti.
- With a view to resolving travel and transportation issues and creating a sustainable transport infrastructure, trends in passenger and goods transportation must be mapped and their role in economic and spatial development must be understood. Projects: Ruesch.
- We must understand energy and materials flows, as well as the way they interact in the urban metabolism, if we are to make them more sustainable in the future. Projects: Scartezzini, Wüstenhagen, Parriaux, van den Bergh, Kaufmann-Hayoz, Wiener, Renaud, Truffer.
